- A Moltoni's Warbler Sylvia cantillans moltonii was observed at
Heist (province of West-Vlaanderen), Belgium on 20 and 21 May 2001. This
taxon was first described in 1937 by Orlando, but not recognized by
subsequent authors, until Gargallo redefined its features (Bull. B.O.C. 1994
114,1:31-36). Moltoni's Warbler differs from other taxa of Subalpine Warbler
by its rattling call (trrrrt). Males have clear light brownish-pink
underparts without any or very little orange or chestnut tinge, being thus
very distinct from an other known race. Moult may differ also, and a
Subalpine Warbler with fresh primaries in spring is likely to be a Moltoni's
Warbler. Moltoni's Warbler is a breeding bird from Corsica, Sardinia and
some of the Balearic Islands (Majorca and Cabrera). A few have been
collected in Tunesia and NW Italy. If accepted by the BAHC, this will
constitute the first record of a Moltoni's Warbler well outside of its known
range. Gabriel Gargallo confirmed that the recording of the call of the
Belgian bird is perfect for moltonii. A file about this record is currently
being compiled by the BAHC.
The BAHC thanks the following people for their help :
- sound recording by Dominique Verbelen
- sonagrams by Serge Hoste; the first three sonagrams represent the song,
and the last one the rattling call of the Moltoni's Warbler in Belgium
